Relive Cinerama: How the West Was Won

Sunday, August 2, 2015 - 1:00pm to 4:30pm

Originally developed by Fred Waller of Paramount's special-effects department as a secret military training device, the Cinerama process made its sensational public bow in New York with This Is Cinerama (1952), a thrill-filled travelogue type of film. This new motion picture technique became one of the most exciting movie-going experiences of the 1950’s.

Recently Cinerama’s two most significant films, This Is Cinerama (1952) and How the West was Won (1963) have been digitally restored in the original Cinerama process.

Retired College of Lake County film professor and film historian Bob Coscarelli has performed extensive research on this long-lost filmmaking experience, traveling the country to interview film industry professionals who worked directly with the process. Bob will discuss the birth and decline of this unique “baby boomer” movie process and share his first-hand knowledge of this thrilling film going experience. Along with a visual presentation on the history of Cinerama, the library will show the restored film How the West Was Won in its original Cinerama format roadshow version.

Complimentary treats will be served during intermission.
