Someone Named Eva by
Joan M. Wolf Reading Level: Grades 5 - 8 In 1942 the Nazis destroyed the town of Lidice, Czechoslovakia. Lidice was emptied of all 500 of its citizens. A few children who looked like the German Aryan ideal were taken from their families and sent to special centers to be reeducated and reborn as German boys and girls. They were given new names and forbidden to speak any language except German. Once they completed their “schooling” they were “adopted” by German families. In this fictionalized account, 11-year-old Milada struggles to remember her family, her country and her very identity as she fights against becoming someone named Eva. The author’s note at the end should not be missed. Reviewer: HG |
