Loan Periods, Checkout Limits, and Fine Schedule

General Policies

*DVD, including Blu-ray checked out on a Library card at any given time: 10 from each department, of which 2 from each department may be High Demand (2-Day) titles. 

Video games are in addition to the 10 DVDs allowed.  Limit: 4 Youth Dept. video games, 2 Adult Dept. video games

Nook – must be 8 years old to check out a Nook

Highland Park Public Library cardholder onlyCardholder must be present to check out the followingAdult, 2-Day DVDs (including Blu-ray); Adult Video Games.

Additional HPPL only: New Adult Audiobooks, JNEWBOOK 21-Day, Adult CD Recent, Kill-A-Watt meters.


  • may not place holds on any Highland Park Library material.
  • may have 2 New YS Audiobooks on their card at any given time.
  • Kill-A-Watt meters.
  • may have up to 25 items charged out at any given time.
  • Stem kits and Ukuleles are availble for check-out to Highwood residents. Check out at the Membership services desk only.

Vacation Loans: up to 6 weeks, limited to 10 items and are renewable. Vacation loans are for items with 28-Day or 21-Day loan periods.  

Renewals: 28-Day items may be renewed 2 times. All other checked out items may be renewed once (including vacation loans). The exceptions: no renewal on 2-Day DVDs (including Blu-ray) or Curriculum material. Renewal period is for the same period as the initial checkout.

Items with Holds are not renewable.  No item with a hold may be renewed.

Hot Picks: 14 day books for HP residents only. May not be renewed.

Interlibrary loans limit: 5 items in the works; fine rate $0.20 per day.

Reference materials do not circulate.  Photocopies may be made, in compliance with copyright laws.
