found a painting?  here's what to do!

A Resource Guide from the
Highland Park Public Library

One of the questions most frequently asked of reference librarians is "I've found (or inherited) a painting; what's it worth?" Librarians are not authorized to appraise art objects, but there are several reference tools at the Highland Park Public Library you could use before turning to an appraiser.

Examine the piece carefully. If it is framed, you will probably need to remove it from its frame. Next, you will want to find out who the artist is. If authorship has not already been established, perhaps it can be determined through the signature. Don't despair if the artist's signature is hard to read, or the artist used his initials. You might be able to identify the artist by using such directories as H.H. Caplan's The Classified Directory of Artists' Signatures, Symbols & Monograms.

MASTER INDEXES TO OTHER BIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES:

After you've established the artist's name, you might wish to have biographical information. Well-known artists such as Rembrandt or Van Gogh would be listed in the library's online catalog. However, if the artist is obscure, or not documented in individual monographs, use one of these sources:

PRICE GUIDES:

Art prices are more or less determined by the auction market. To ascertain the worth of an artist's work, consult auction records. It's best to track activity over a number of successive years. You will sometimes find that auction records are the only source of information available on an artist. There are many routes for checking auction prices (including the Internet and various databases). The following guide is available at the Highland Park Public Library:
