Landmarks Illinois
This foundation is dedicated to the preservation of architectural landmarks
throughout Illinois and is also home to the Louis Sullivan Society. The website
features a list of endangered buildings as well as preservation easement
information. A comprehensive preservation resources page is also included.
Commission on Chicago Landmarks
Featuring an interactive map of Chicago landmark districts and buildings
as well as brief biographies of notable Chicago architects, this website is a useful place to begin local landmark research. Photographs of
architects and architecturally important buildings are also included.
Chicago
Architects Oral History Project
This project by the Art Institute of Chicago's Department of
Architecture includes interviews with prominent architects conducted over a 20
year period. Some notable interviews include those with students of Mies van der
Rohe and "The Chicago Seven." The site also includes photos of the architects
and their works as well as downloadable PDFs of the interviews.
National Trust for
Historic Preservation
This private, non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving
national historic places and communities. The website offers useful tips on
preserving the original character of buildings and neighborhoods. The Trust's
annual "America's 11 Most Endangered Places" offers a glimpse of at-risk sites.
The 2006 list includes
Kenilworth,
Illinois.
Chicago Architecture Foundation
Dedicated to "advancing public interest and
education in architecture and related design" the Chicago Architecture
Foundation offers a plethora of resources and fun things to do. The foundation
offers numerous tours highlighting Chicago architecture, be it by bus, on foot
or via boat. Some of the many tours offered include: Highland Park Walk;
Lake Forest Cemetery;
Mies & Modernism: The IIT
Campus Tour; Architecture River Cruise. The CAF is an excellent resource for
anything related to Chicago architecture.
Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation
Trust
No discussion of architecture would be complete without mentioning Frank
Lloyd Wright. The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust in Oak Park, Illinois
provides tours and educational programs as well as a museum collection and
research library.
Millennium Park Chicago
The most recent significant building addition to Chicago, Millennium
Park is full of various structural feats. The website features a free,
downloadable audio tour of the park as well as overviews of the structures and
the artists who created them.
Highland Park
Information Gateway: Architecture
A list of historically significant Highland Park homes is listed on the
webpage as well as books, available at the Highland Park Library, that may be
useful in researching Highland Park homes.
The Center for Neighborhood
Technology
The future of building and landscape architecture will no doubt include
the use of sustainable resources and techniques. This Chicago organization
offers a wealth of resources to make sustainable building and living that much
easier.

This blog, "designed to be a place to find out what's going on in
Chicago's architectural community and to discuss its current state and future
potential" is written by architecture writer Lynn Becker. People can read Becker's musings
on Chicago architecture and then post comments. Recent blog posts have discussed
everything from the "Plug Bug" mural that overlooks Block 37 to the building of
the new Spertus Institute on Michigan Avenue. Becker also includes numerous
photos of these architectural works.
SkyscraperPage.com
This website bills itself as "the best place for
skyscraper diagrams and discussion." The site includes architectural drawings of
thousands of buildings as well as information about proposed and completed
skyscrapers. The side-by-side diagrams of buildings are especially useful. Users
can search by specific criteria, including city, height, year built or structure

Chicago Spire
This is the official website for the yet-to-be-built Chicago Spire
building. Scheduled to be completed in 2010, the 2,000 foot tall tower will be
the tallest in North America. This website contains several illustrations of the
project as well as brief information about the architect.
