Summer officially starts on June 21 when the solstice takes place. But here at the Highland Park Public Library, we consider Ravinia to be the start of summer! This summer at Ravinia, all sorts of neat and exciting things are happening. Here are of some of them.
On June 22nd, Ravinia is hosting a live national broadcast of Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.
Matchbox Twenty and the Goo Goo Dolls are playing three shows between July 2nd - 4th at the Martin Theatre. Singer-songwriter Kate Earl opens on all three dates. David Byrne & St Vincent will be at Ravinia on July 6th playing things from their recent acclaimed collaborative album, “Love This Giant.” The library owns albums by both St. Vincent and David Byrne as well as the aforementioned collaborative album. On July 16th, rising string quartet Brooklyn Rider will play a sophisticated and elegant set of Mozart, Bartók, and others. The library owns their latest album for you to listen to. Here is a link to it.
The Under the Sun tour comes to Ravinia on July 20th featuring a crazy amount of 90’s bands. Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon, and Fastball will all there playing alternative music that you can dance and have a good time to with your friends. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will perform the score of “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” in it’s entirety and in sync with a screening of the film itself. This will happen on August 15th - 16th. The library owns the soundtrack to “The Two Towers.” Here is a link to it.
Buddy Guy returns to Ravinia on August 17th for a night of blues and rock and roll. George Thorogood & The Destroyers open for him. It should be a fun and rowdy time. Jazz legend Ramsey Lewis is coming to Ravinia with special guest Natalie Cole. This is happening on August 28th and should be an exhilarating night of jazz. Alumni from the Ravinia's Steans Music Institute Program for Jazz open. The library owns a healthy amount of albums by both Ramsey Lewis and Natalie Cole in the collection for you to use.
