File your federal taxes for free, if your adjusted income is under $64,000. If your adjusted income is over $64,000, take advantage of the "free file fillable forms" to avoid mathematical mistakes.
- Moraine Township: Call for an appointment (847) 780-6644. From February 1 through April 8, Moraine Township will offer free assistance to low-and-moderate-income taxpayers filing their 2016 income tax returns through the IRS VITA Program (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance). Volunteers are trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to prepare basic returns for taxpayers earning less than $55,000 in 2016. Appointments will take place in the Moraine Township Office, 777 Central Avenue, Highland Park, and are available mornings, afternoons, and evenings, Monday to Thursday and Saturdays 9 AM to 12 PM. Walk-in hours are Saturday 9 AM to 12 PM.
- AARP Foundation Tax Aide is available free to taxpayers with low and moderate income, with special attention to those 60 and older.
