Getting Started with Bibliocommons


Create an Account  |  MY HPPL: Your Holds, Checkouts, Fines, Shelves, and Lists  |  Change Your Privacy Settings


To Create an Account:
1.  Under "Quick Links" on the library's site, click on "Catalog".
2.  Once in Bibliocommons, click on "Log In" in the upper right corner.

3.  Enter your Highland Park LIbrary card number, without spaces, and enter your PIN where it asks for "Password".  If you do not have a PIN or cannot remember it, call the "Circulation Department at 847-432-0216, ext. 3, and they can assist you.


4.  On the Welcome page, your name will be listed, and you willl have the option of entering your birthdate.  If you choose not to enter a birthdate, Bibliocommons will assume you are a minor (under age 13) and you will not be able to create a username, send or receive messages, or write comments.  Once you have entered your birthdate, click "Continue".


5.  Create a unique username.  Remember, this username will be visible to others.

To ensure your privacy, do not use your library card number or other identifying information.  Check the availability of your username and make any necessary changes.  Read the Terms of Use and check the box next to "I accept the Terms of Use".  Enter your unique username and click "Register".  You may now search for items, place holds, and renew materials!

MY HPPL: Your Holds, Checkouts, Fines, Shelves, and Lists

To view your checked out items, holds, fines, shelves, and lists, hover over the "MY HPPL" link at the top of the page and click on the items you wish to see. 

-Clicking on "Checked Out" will show you materials on your card and allow you to select items to renew.

-Clicking on "Holds" will display your holds and allow you cancel or suspend them.

-Clicking on "Fines" will allow you to view any fines on your card and pay them electronically.

To Alter Your Privacy Settings:

The default settings in Bibliocommons is to make new titles added to your shelves, along with your comments, public.  To make change your privacy settings, log in to your account and click on "My Settings".

In My Settings, click on the "Privacy" tab:

Check the boxes next to the items you wish to make private and click "Save".

To make LISTS private: Lists can only be made private on a list-by-list basis.  You can choose to make a list private when you create one or go into edit it, by checking the box next to "Make this list private" and clicking "Save".
