Volunteer Opportunities


The Highland Park Public Library is seeking volunteers to work with our friendly staff on a variety of tasks.

Volunteer hours are flexible. If you are detail-oriented, well organized and enjoy customer service, this is the volunteer opportunity for you!

Membership Services: Notify patrons by phone of reserved materials ready for pick up, shelve materials, and various office tasks.

Media Services: Shelve materials, shelf-read, photocopy handouts, clean and repair discs

Technical Services: Apply labels, stamps and book covers, mend and clean all types of materials, record processing and withdrawal statistics. Open boxes, check in items against purchase order lists, organize paperwork for payment approval, and prepare received items for cataloging.

Youth Services: Maintain literacy areas including cleaning and restocking materials; photocopy literacy area materials, listen to book reports during Summer Reading program (June - July).  See below for the Junior Page Program (June - August) 

Friends of the Library: Assist by sorting through donations, setting up regular book sales in the Book Nook, as well as the once or twice a year Big Sales in the auditorium and operating those sales.

** Please note that the Junior Page Volunteer Program is on temporary hiatus. 

    • The Junior Page Volunteer Program is open to entering 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th graders. There will be three three week sessions. Enrollment will be based on a first come, first serve basis for candidates that have completed an online volunteer profile, submitted a parental consent form and have scored above 80% on the assessment test.

    • Session I (June) 15 Spots Available
      Session II (July) 15 Spots Available
      Session III (August) 15 Spots Available

    • Junior Pages are to work at least one 90 minute shift per week and no more than one 90 minute shift per day.

    • Interested parties can apply starting May 1st. Please apply online through the Junior Page Application link on the Highland Park Public Library website.

      We do not accept “drop-in” Volunteers.

    • Junior Pages will assist in various tasks at the Highland Park Public Library to support its mission. These tasks may include, but are not limited to:

      • Reshelving recently returned materials.
      • Inspecting shelves for accuracy and correcting errors.
      • Inducting returned items.
      • Inspecting and cleaning Audio/Visual materials.
      • Sorting items in the circulation workroom.
      • Performing accuracy checks for on shelf items.
      • Straightening up bookshelves and various areas of the library.
      • STEM kit piece inspecting and testing.
      • Game piece checking.
      • Refilling scrap paper at computer catalog stations.
      • Shredding paper.
      • Assisting with processing withdrawn materials.
      • Other duties and special projects as needed.
